Australians Call for the End of Puppy Farms
The results of a recent poll by VetShopAustralia.com.au has made it clear that the nation is well and truly behind the banning of puppy farms after an overwhelming amount of support was given to anti-puppy farming organisation, Oscar's Law.
The poll was created to seek the public’s opinion on which animal charity organisations should receive part of a $2000 cash donation. VetShopAustralia.com.au head vet Dr Mark Perissinotto was extremely impressed by the number of public supporters who are clearly concerned and passionate about the welfare and treatment of animals.
"There is simply no place in humane society for the mistreatment of animals and this has been outlined by the results of the poll, which has seen over 6000 people have their say" Dr Perissinotto said.
He believed that the overwhelming level of public support given to Oscar’s Law has shown it’s time to put an end to the atrocious treatment that Australian pets are being subjected to in puppy farms every day.
"Enough is enough and it’s time for the government to step up and close puppy factories once and for all, there urgently needs to be more unified laws to give animal welfare officers greater search and seize powers and the ability to lay charges against anybody running illegal puppy farms," Dr Perissinotto said.
"Oscar’s law aims to abolish factory farming and end using dogs as 'primary producers' which is a cruel and unacceptable life for these animals. Over breeding, minimal or no veterinary care, poor nutrition, poor hygiene and overcrowded conditions were just some of the problems faced by animals unfortunate enough to be raised in these highly inadequate breeding facilities," he said.
Dr Perissinotto also strongly recommended that anybody thinking of getting a puppy should make sure they know exactly where the puppy is coming from.
"It is so important to make sure pets are purchased from a reputable breeder and to ensure you either meet the parents or at least see a picture to be certain they haven’t been raised in a puppy farm," he said.
The poll also showed a large amount of support for the Australian Working Dog Rescue, Pet's Haven Animal Shelter and surprisingly, a guinea pig welfare organisation called Australian Cavy Sanctuary Brisbane, which Dr Perissinotto says is clear evidence that all animals are in need of being protected to ensure they are provided with a safe and happy future.
