Don’t Give Purr of the Moment Presents

With the silly season almost in full swing, a leading Australian Vet has revealed the important considerations that parents and friends should take into account before giving pets as presents this Christmas.

Dr Mark Perissinotto, head vet at VetShopAustralia.com.au said people should remember to look at the bigger picture when making these types of spur of the moment purchases at Christmas time.

“It is important for those giving the gift to take into account, what the person’s lifestyle is like and what they do for a living,” Dr Perissinotto said.

“Remember that buying an animal changes your life significantly and the intended recipient must agree to accept responsibility for the pet and be willing to provide the animal with full time care.”

“The number of rejected kittens and puppies that are returned to shelters in the weeks following Christmas grow significantly each year and most commonly people do not realise the ongoing costs and attention an animal requires.”

“Pets can also be expensive to care for with food, vet bills and registration equalling around $1000 a year for the average family,” he said.

Dr Mark Perissinotto also discussed the problems associated with giving young children pets as presents.

“Parents need to remember that the excitement of a new pet can wear off with young children and most likely they will be left to walk, feed and care for the animal,” Dr Perissinotto said.

“Purchasing or adopting a new furry friend is a personal process that should be left to the new owner unless you are sure the entire family is ready to welcome the new addition," Dr Perissinotto said.
