Happy New Year for Pets

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Media release:  9 January, 2012

Happy New Year for Pets

A leading veterinarian has urged that pet owners include their animals when making New Year's resolutions this year encouraging nationwide responsible pet ownership and marking 2012 as the year to make sure every animal is getting the care and treatment they deserve.

Dr Mark Perissinotto, head vet for VetShopAustralia.com.au, said the New Year was a great time to establish a pattern of behaviour for pet owners to improve the health and wellbeing of their animals.

"Improving health and fitness is one of the most common New Year's resolutions that people make and believe it or not pets can actually become the perfect fitness buddy," he said.

"By promising to get outside and exercise with your dog for at least 30 minutes each day you will not only be improving your own health and fitness levels but you will also provide your beloved pet with the same benefits," he said.

Dr Perissinotto also explained that another way to improve your pet care in the New Year was to make sure all vaccinations and treatments were constantly up to date and regularly implemented.

"Pet owners will find that by marking vaccinations and flea and tick treatment schedules on the calendar it will help to ensure you pet is taken care of each month. It is such a crucial part of keeping your pets health in top condition and can easily be forgotten in the midst of people’s busy schedules," he said.

"Other great New Year’s pet care routines should include feeding your pet good-quality food and in appropriate amounts, taking your dog to behaviour training classes, conducting regular grooming and to ensure your home is safe and pet friendly,” Dr Perissinotto said.

“Last but definitely not least you should aim to spend as much quality time with your pet as you can to show them how much you really love and care for them,” he said.
