Puppy Dog Eyes Earn Top Spot in the Bed

We all know the importance of a good night’s sleep and it seems our furry friends are certainly getting their fair share. A recent nation-wide poll by VetShopAustralia.com.au has revealed the days of dogs being outside in the kennel are in the past as majority of pet owners now allow dogs in the bed.

A total 64% of respondents admitted that allowing their dog in the bed was a regular routine in their household. While a smaller 14% revealed that even though their dog was not encouraged to sleep in the bed, sometimes the puppy dog eyes were too hard to resist and they occasionally get away with sneaking in.

Not everyone is as lenient when it comes to having pooches make themselves comfortable in the bed with 39% of respondents revealing that dogs in the bed is never allowed.

Head Veterinarian at VetShopAustralia Dr Mark Perissinotto took it as no surprise that more and more people are happy to snuggle up to Fido during the night.

"For many people a dog is their only companion, so having them keep the bed warm at night can help provide comfort and eliminate feelings of loneliness,"

"There are also other pet owners that simply can't say no to their furry friend when it jumps into the bed in the night, even if it means sacrificing a comfortable night’s sleep," he said.

Dr Mark did however warn that on some occasions it can a crucial mistake letting a young dog into the bed, explaining that it will quickly become habit making it very hard to get them to sleep in their own bed as they grow to full size.

"Some people made the mistake of letting dogs in the bed as a puppy and now have to deal with the consequence of sharing the bed with a full sized dog.”

“Unless you want a life of snoring alongside your four legged friend, it is best to have them sleep out in their own bed from the beginning so you can enjoy a good night sleep."
