Weather Predictions Spark Pet Safety Warning

With severe weather predictions’ being forecast for the summer ahead a leading Veterinarian has urged that all families be disaster ready with a solid evacuation plan in place to ensure everyone remains safe during the event of an emergency - including pets.

Dr Mark Perissinotto, the managing director of VetShopAustralia.com.au said with cyclones, bushfires and heavy rainfalls all predicted to take place around Australia all safety precautions must be in place to protect family members as well as animals.

“Our pet's can sadly become forgotten casualties in natural disasters, but this can easily be helped with some simple planning and extra preparation," Dr. Mark Perissinotto said.

He believed that although people’s safety must always come first, the best ways for keeping any pets safe during a natural disaster was to develop an emergency evacuation plan suited for family and pets, create a pet emergency supply kit that includes pet medication and to display your pet emergency rescue sticker in an easily visible location.

“There are also simple measures you can undertake to keep your pets safe if choosing to remain on the property such as moving them inside, giving them access to plenty of water and finding safe places for them to stay,” Dr Perissinotto said.

“Also ensure your pets have ID tags and are micro-chipped with current addresses as pets can get scared and often run away during intense weather conditions,” he said.

Dr Perissinotto also recommends the creation of an evacuation plan detailing how you will evacuate, a safe evacuation point, and a list of pet-friendly accommodation including contact details.

VetShopAustralia.com.au are giving away free pet emergency rescue stickers which detail the number and type of pets in your household, cutting down the time it takes emergency crews to locate them and ensures that none are left behind, which Dr. Perissinotto believes increases your pet’s chances of survival in an emergency situation.

“Just visit www.vetshopaustralia.com.au/petrescuesticker and fill out the form for your free pet emergency rescue sticker and a guide to preparing your emergency plan,” said Dr. Perissinotto. “It doesn’t take long to fill out, but could be the difference between your pet surviving or not.”
