Seresto – The Longest Lasting Protection from Fleas and Ticks

Seresto Flea & Tick Collar

Well, maybe it’s not a super flea and tick collar but compared to other flea and tick collars it’s a superior product, protecting your pet’s whole body from fleas for 8 months and ticks for 4 months.

Uh, Yes Please!

Seresto Flea & Tick Collar

So How Does it Work?
Seresto has sustained release technology that slowly releases active ingredients over several months. Once the collar is applied, active ingredients are transferred from the collar to the hair, and finally the skin. They are then distributed evenly throughout the skin and hair surface.

Active Ingredients and Their Effects

The Seresto collar has two active ingredients that have activity against fleas and ticks. Imidacloprid kills adult fleas and flea larvae which is important for breaking the flea life cycle. Flumethrin is the ingredient that repels and kills ticks. It also kills the larvae and a younger stage of the tick called the nymph.

Seresto Collar VS Other Flea and Tick Collars

Seresto Flea & Tick Collar

It can kill fleas as quickly as 2 hours and ticks within 6 hours. Speed of kill is important with flea and tick control. You want a flea dead before it is capable of laying eggs. This period is usually within 24 hours.

Other flea collars typically have an overpowering odor and tends to leave a white powder residue on your hand.

Seresto provides protection for up to 8 months killing more than 90% of fleas even on the last day. Most other flea collars only provide up to 3 months of protection with the percentage of fleas killed over time decreasing dramatically.

  • Provides 8 months of flea of tick prevention which is longer than any other product out there. Great for those who are forgetful or struggle with compliance. You just put on the collar on and it will do the rest.
  • Can save you money when compared to equivalent flea and tick preventatives such as Frontline Plus or Nexgard. The cost averages around $90 for a year of flea preventative while the alternatives are about double that.

  • It’s a collar that is only effective as long as your pet wears it. If your pet decides to take it off then coverage is lost.
  • May not work as well with breeds with thick coats such as German Shepherds, Newfoundlands or St Bernards.
  • Even though it is waterproof, if exposed to water too often it can lose up to 3 months of its duration.

What Pet Parents Want to Know about Seresto (FAQ’s)

Fleas and ticks are only a problem where I live for a few months of the year. Can I remove the collar after a couple of months and reapply it the next year? I wouldn’t keep the collar on my dog unless the critters were active as I don’t like using chemicals unnecessarily.

The manufacturer (Bayer) discourages pet owners from doing this as it has not been tested and might have an impact on the level of protection pets receive. Flea control should be used all year long because fleas can still remain dormant in your house no matter your location or the weather. But take note that if Seresto has to be removed temporarily, it can be re-applied to your dog without any problems.

I caught my dog chewing on the collar. Should I be concerned?

Seresto has been extensively tested for its safety, including pets chewing on the collar or ingesting the entire collar. As the vast majority of active ingredients are bound in the collar matrix and not on the surface, the only side effect recorded after ingesting a full collar was a mild stomach upset (e.g. loose stools), which was resolved within 24 hours.

To prevent your dog from chewing the collar again, you might want to reattach it slightly more tightly

How long do I have to wait after having applied a spot-on before I can use Seresto?

There is no need to wait between applications. Seresto can be applied immediately after spot-on application.

What should I do if the collar becomes covered in dirt? Can this impair the efficacy of Seresto?

Bayer is not aware of dirt having an impact on the release of active ingredients in Seresto and hence its efficacy. If the collar should become dirty, it can simply be wiped down with a moist cloth.
